Implementing Agency

Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency and Empretec

The Gambia Investment and Export Promotions Agency is a government establishment to among other things promote and facilitate the growth of investments in the Gambia, develop export growth potentials and provide support to MSMEs for economic growth, promote employment and wealth creation as well as promoting policy advocacy.

The Gambia Investment and Export Promotion Agency in June 2014 was given the responsibility by government through MOTIE to implement the empretec project. This project is being funded by UNDP and government of the Gambia.

Since the inception of the project, a total of over 2100 entrepreneurs have been trained across the country. This number includes men, women, youth and the elderly who after the training have demonstrated a lot of behavioral change towards their business and life. The project also provides Business Advisory Service to a majority of the entrepreneurs and help them through couching and advisory to grow their businesses from point A to point B ( B being the desired state of goal of their business).

Why Empretec Business Award

Having trained over 2000 entrepreneurs and given them the much needed training and support through business advisory, linkages, financing and other opportunities, It is prudent to take stock of their growth curve and reward them where necessary. It is against this background that Empretec Gambia is organizing it first Business Award for entrepreneurs supported by the project. It is also a measure of the successes the project has made since its inception in 2014.

This event is also an opportunity to celebrate the successes the entrepreneurs have achieved especially in the development of the economy. It is a truism that entrepreneurship has been recognized as a factor of production which will in no small way contribute to the vibrancy of the economy of the Gambia.

As the project is coming to an end, June 2017, it is an opportune moment to assess the successes registered by the project and also learn from the short-comings as well as prepare a sustainability plan for the continuation of the Empretec project. This is why the Business Award will be preceded by a Donor Roundtable which brings together all key stakeholders for the sustainability of the project. This will also help in the ideals of the project as integrated into the overall developmental  Blue Print for the Gambia.
